Natural CO₂ Sinks: the Secret Superpower |
Guten Tag ,
Forests are true climate heroes. They cool the air, protect the soil and provide a habitat for countless animal species. As natural sinks, they also extract CO₂ from the atmosphere – a key superpower in the fight against the climate crisis.
But forests are under pressure: heat, drought, storms and pests are affecting many forest areas around the world. In some regions, such as Germany, forests now emit more CO₂ than they sequester. They're going from sinks to sources.
We can do something about it!
From Lucerne to Nicaragua, we can counteract this worrying development with targeted protective measures such as climate-adapted reforestation and sustainable forest management in our projects.
However, other nature-based solutions such as fertile soils, rewetted moors and innovative approaches such as biochar also reduce CO₂ in the long term while strengthening ecosystems and food security at the same time.
In this special newsletter, we explain how natural sinks work, what threatens them and how we can harness their power for a climate-resilient future.

From Climate Hero to CO₂ Source? Why Forests need our Special Attention |
Trees absorb CO₂ – that’s a well-known fact. But climate change is changing conditions. Heat, forest fires, storms and pests are putting forests under increasing strain. In some regions, they’re at risk of turning from carbon sinks to sources of CO₂. Read our commentary to find out how targeted forest management is counteracting this trend – and how forests can be preserved as a line of defence against climate change.

Natural Climate Protection: Using Arable Soils as Carbon Sinks |
Hard to imagine just a few years ago, but today we know that fertile arable soils are a key component of natural CO₂ sinks. The more fertile the soil, the more carbon can be stored. Read our article to learn about the promising results of our first pilot project – and why this concept has great potential for the future.

I am Adrian Kempf from Lucerne |
Moors store carbon – and have been doing so for millennia. The CO₂ removed from the atmosphere by plants is sequestered there in the long term in the form of soil carbon. But many bogs have been drained – with serious consequences for the climate. Together with our project partners such as Adrian Kempf, we are renaturating moors throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland and bringing these silent protectors of the climate back into play!
